Community references can lag a new patch; newer official notes and the live game take priority when details conflict.

Quick answer: Donate a new artifact before selling duplicates. The source area matters more than the sell price: town dig spots, the Western Ruins, mine biomes, the Deep Woods, and special magic spots feed different museum sets.

Where artifacts come from

Artifacts are primarily found through archaeology spots and region-specific dig sites. Mine artifacts are tied to biome progression, while later systems add unusual source pools. If repeated digging produces only duplicates, switch regions rather than spending the whole day on one map.

Donation workflow

  1. Check the museum icon or collection menu before selling.
  2. Donate the first copy of every artifact.
  3. Keep one duplicate when a quest, gift, or decorative system may need it.
  4. Sell surplus common duplicates to fund more exploration.
  5. Record which region produced the find; that note is more useful than a generic “dig everywhere” instruction.

Rarity and skill choices

Archaeology perks can improve the value of digging, increase the odds of higher-rarity finds, or create additional uses for duplicates. Choose perks around the collection gap you actually have rather than the artifact with the largest base price.
